Product Review: Joly Joy LED Desk Lamp, Dimmable Eye-Care Reading Lamp, 3 Light Modes ,6 Dimmable Levels , USB Rechargeable (Black)

4.0 out of 5 stars

Simple, easy to use, contemporary rechargeable desk lamp

We can start with the style, which is eye catchingly simple, clean lines and certainly unique enough.  The LED light itself is built into 2” x 12” flat metal (aluminum alloy) enclosure that is attached to a silicone rubber stand and power supply with easy to use control panel.  The flexibility is limited to the ‘neck’ of the product which does bend a full 180 degrees opposite the light controls degrees with no issues.  I did not break out my protractor a) because I don’t own one and b) it doesn’t go 180 degrees the other way since it is bending over itself and over the light controls.  The brand logo illuminates on the back when the light is on, it does not add nor detract from the product.

The light itself has a color temperature switch (button) on the front that allows for three lighting modes: Cool White Mode (5400K), Neutral White Mode (4200K) and Warm white Mode (3100K) and 6 dimming modes for each light level; I used fuzzbert as a point of reference for you in the pictures… he’s the small purple ball of hair with feet.  While the light modes itself are generally less glary than a traditional desk lamp, this lamp does throw out a fairly broad and unfocused beam… I’ve been using it at my desk and can’t seem to find a place that it would work for, if I needed to take notes or read at a desk regularly I could see this being more beneficial but for everyday computer work it’s a bit overkill and distracting.

The power consumption is nice, stated 5 watts from a 2000mah Li-Polymer Battery that takes ~3 hours to fully charge, but I’ve read other customers state that it’s closer to 12w with a max of 960 Lumens.  Qualitatively I would say it’s not overly bright, but can cast a long shadow, an application where you need a light right over your work would be a good fit of a user profile for this product.  Use time is stated anywhere from 3-30 hours depending on the brightness with a low battery notification that kicks on when there is about 10-20 minutes left of power.  The charger uses a standard micro USB port, not a bad light for the price and the portability feature is nice but I would be worried about the light turning on in my travel bag as there is no travel lock function.
