Product Review: Align Probiotic Supplement 56 count (Packaging May Vary)

2.0 out of 5 stars Align, Pending Probiotic Class Action Settlement

Probiotics are good bacteria that are either the same as or very similar to the bacteria that are already in your body. The lower digestive tract alone teems with a complex and diverse community of these bacteria. Lactobacillus species, Bifidobacteria, Saccharomyces boulardii and Bacillus coagulans are the most common beneficial bacteria used in probiotic dietary supplement products. But each type — and each strain of each type — can work in different ways. Not all probiotics are the same, nor do they all have the same effect in the body, nor do all company's make the same claims about their effectiveness.

As of the date of this review, a settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit against The Procter & Gamble Company (“P&G” or “Defendant”) about the advertising of P&G’s Align® probiotic supplement. P&G denies all of the claims in the lawsuit and any wrongdoing, and continues to stand behind its Align® product as an effective probiotic. The Court has not decided the dispute. Instead, the parties agreed to a settlement. More information is available here.

Align markets a ‘basic’ bacteria strain, Bifidobacterium. It is found in healthy newborns and breast-fed infants. It also populates your gastrointestinal tract, especially your intestines and colon. This strain supports digestive health, immune function and normal cholesterol levels. It also plays an important role in helping your body absorb vitamins and minerals. Bifidobacterium has shown an ability to help promote regular bowel movements.

I preface my actually review with this information as I wish I would of read a review like this before making my purchase.  I purchased this item after some research as this item seemed like an easy solution but I did not enjoy a noticeable difference and for the price I expected more, not just in quantity which would have been nice but more of a change in my system.  I have had the same if not better results from yogurt with live cultures, Kefir and buttermilk.  Fermented cabbage and other vegetables found in Korean kimchi, sauerkraut and pickled vegetables also have probiotic effects.  Also there has been a strong demand for this in infant formula, usually Bifidobacterium to mimic the gut-protective effects of breast milk. Just please note that heating or pasteurizing the final product kills the bacteria so that they have no probiotic benefit.
