Product Review: Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition

4.0 out of 5 starsGreat! If you can find one at a reasonable price or can wait another 6 months

The NES Classic Edition system is a miniaturized version of the original NES released in 1985.  Includes a full size NES Classic Controller but can also be used with NES Virtual Console games on a Wii or Wii U console by connecting it to a Wii Remote.

I wouldn’t say there are cons but there are a fair number of ‘would have been great if they had just done this…’ First of all the availability of the product is slim forcing up pricing, Nintendo's decision to discontinue the unit as announced in April 2017 and it was never suggested there would be a limited run on production. As it stands demand outweigh supply pushing this product up to a price that may not necessarily be worth the investment. Supposedly there is to be additional units released in the summer of 2018.  There are only 30 pre-installed games, some decent titles but as these sets are currently selling about 3-4x the suggested $60 MSRP which is a tough sell especially since the device cannot play old NES cartridges.

The unit overall is fun'ish. The short 3-foot long controller cable makes the console certainly makes it less convenient to play. The display modes are a nice touch, there are three (3) a CRT filter, to make your TV look like an older CRT Monitor with scan lines; a 4:3 ratio to give you the ‘original NES game look’ with a slight horizontal stretch; and pixel perfect where each pixel is a perfect square to give the user the same experience as the designer. For video output, the system features an HDMI connection, which puts out 60 Hz video for all games. If you can find one, celebrate! If not, beware of counterfeit devices out there and wait until summer.
